Dear ATAA Members and
Friends of
Türkiye:
I would like to salute you on a successful
April 2010.
Working with ATAA's Civic Engagement Director
Yenal Küçüker and ATAA Regional VPs, many ATAA
component organizations from California to New
England obtained April 23 Children's Day
Proclamations to honor the Turkish tradition of
celebrating the world's children and UNESCO's
endorsement of this special day. We also
remembered all who gave their lives in the War of
Gallipoli, at an Anzac Day Dawn Service at the
Korean War Memorial in Washington DC on April
25th.
ATAA also held high level
meetings with the U.S. Department of State,
Turkish Foreign Ministry, and U.S. Office of the
Director of National Intelligence. Secretary
General Pelin Aylangan and I stressed the
multi-dimensional strategic relationship between
Turkey and the United States, and the importance
of ATAA and the Turkish American community to
bring balance to the debate and to support
informed decision-making regarding U.S. policy on
Türkiye.
 Throughout April, Turkish
Americans nationwide steadfastly advocated the
formation of the Türkiye - Armenia Historical
Commission and reconciliation based on
truth. ATAA local chapters from California
to New York, as well as in Canada, hosted
Professor Türkkaya Ataöv to speak on "What really
happened on April 24, 1915". At the Capitol
Hill lecture on April 15th, I expressed that the
events of 1915 are very important to ATAA, and
that the ATAA Capital Forum and National Speakers
Bureaut will actively bring qualified speakers to
Congress and grassroots America to hear the
contra-genocide perspective on the events of
1915.
Throughout April, House support
for H.Res. 252 continued to weaken.
Armenia's recent suspension of rapprochement with
Türkiye cast doubt on the sincerity of the
Armenian side. President Obama's April 24
Proclamation continued U.S. policy not to
characterize the events of 1915 as a crime.
The Proclamation described the events of 1915 with
the Armenian word for "catastrophe" or "calamity",
an expression we first see used in the March 1923
public address of Hovhannes Katchaznouni, the
Prime Minister of the gerrybuilt Armenian Republic
that lasted from 1919-1922. Katchaznouni
blamed the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(ARF-Dashnak) for the "Armenian calamity" that
culminated during the Armenian Revolt
(1880-1919). Katchaznouni expressed that by
an "extraordinary mental aberration" ARF/Dashnak
believed that the Allied Powers were reliable and
that Armenian Revolt could actually succeed.
Katchaznouni concluded, "We ought to have
negotiated peacefully with the
Turks."
President Obama's April 24
Proclamation commended Turks who helped Armenians
during the "calamity". I say, "of course we
did," for we did not carry hatred or malice in
defending Anatolia against AR/Dashnak and the
Russians. As Turks helped injured Anzacs in
Gallipoli, they helped similarly situated Armenian
combatants and non-combatants during the Armenian
Revolt. Courage and mercy were Turkish
qualities then, as they are
today.
 ATAA formed Vanguard to
remember the victims of modern Armenian terrorism
as well as more than 40,000 Turks who were
massacred in the March 1915 Armenian Revolt in
Van. Between April 22-24 in Washington DC,
over 150 Turkish Americans, mostly college
students, gathered in front of the Turkish Embassy
to show solidarity with Türkiye and to support
US-Turkish relations, while an equal number of
ARF-ANCA members protested against Turkey and
condemned President Obama for not endorsing the
Armenian Cause. It was the first time ever
that the size of the Turkish American group
equaled that of ARF. In New York, ATAA, lead
by VP Ali Çınar, participated in the Young Turks
Protest in Times Square.
On behalf
of ATAA Board of Directors, Board of Trustees
and staff, I thank the Turkish American community
and our component organizations for their
dedication to and diligence in promoting
US-Turkish relations and our Turkish
heritage.
America may be a big country, but as
a Turkish proverb says, "the shortest distance is
the road from heart to heart." It's a
pleasure and honor to serve you!
Sevgi ve saygılarımla,
Günay
Evinch

Professor Türkkaya Ataöv Completes
10-City US-Canada Tour
Professor Türkkaya Ataöv completed a 10
city lecture tour between March 20 and April 20, 2010.
The topic of the lecture series was "Turks and
Armenians: What Really Happened on April 24, 1915", an
appropriate topic for the month of April. In each
city Professor Ataov shared his immense knowledge and
erudition without asking for anything in
return. His lectures and books are based on solid
references and he is able to easily refute Armenian
claims and falsifications. The tour was organized under
the ATAA Capital Forum and National Speakers Bureau
program with generous support from the Turkish Coalition
of America (TCA), Drs. Ali and Fevziye
Manizade, ATAA member and some non member
organizations in the US and Canada. Logistics and
hosting were coordinated by ATAA Trustee Oya Bain. The
program would not have been possible without the support
and leadership of: ATAA VPs Ali Çınar, Demet Cabbar, Alp
Berker, and Hatice Dinç, President Elect Ergün
Kırlıkovalı, Nuri Sabuncu, Fatma Sarıkaya (who helped
with the Ankara phase of the Ataov trip); Lydia Borland
and Alan Makovsky who secured the House Foreign Affairs
Committee Room in the Rayburn House Office Building in
Capitol Hill; and New York leaders Evgin Heath and
Mehve Ş Sönmez. [ read]

ATAA Lays Wreath at
Anzac
Memorial
On April 25, the ATAA participated in the Anzac Day
Dawn Service at the Korean War Memorial in Washington
DC. ATAA President Gunay Evinch joined the Defense
Attache's of Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France,
Korea, and Türkiye, as well as the U.S. Department of
Defense, American Legion, Australian Association and
Atatürk Society, to place a wreath in memory of all who
gave their lives in the War of Gallipoli. In his
Prayer for All Nations, Australian Army Colonel,
Chaplain Geoff Webb, advised the importance of carefully
assessing personal and political motives and military
objectives before sending young men and women to war --
so that needless catastrophes can be avoided. He
commended the Anzacs for their loyalty to country and
"the Turks who bravely defended their homeland".
ATAA's wreath provided Atatürk's famous words of
reconciliation: "You, the mothers who sent their
sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your
sons are now lying in our embrace and are in
peace. After having lost their lives on this land,
they have become our sons as
well."

Foreign Minister Davutoglu Meets
with ATAA
Following his meetings with President Obama and
Secretary Clinton, Foreign Minister Davutoglu received
ATAA President Gunay Evinch and Secretary General Pelin
Aylangan at the Turkish Embassy. Foreign Minister
Davutoglu commended the Turkish American community's
growing civic engagement, and ATAA's strong and
embracing leadership. President Evinch expressed
that with "solidarity within diversity", there is
nothing the Turkish American community cannot
achieve.
|
ATAA
Meeting at Department of State
On April 6, ATAA President Gunay Evinch
met with Assistant Deputy Undersecretary Tina
Kaidanow. They discussed the Turkish American
community and ATAA's role. President Evinch also
conveyed the Turkish American community's support for
the Historical Commission of the Armenia-Türkiye
Protocols; concern regarding the absence of deadlines
for the withdrawal of Armenian forces from Azerbaijan;
solidarity with Turkish Cypriot's and their goal to form
a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation on Cyprus; and
commendation of US-Turkish cooperation against the PKK
and other terrorist organizations worldwide.
Evinch stressed the multi-dimensional strategic
relationship between Turkey and the United States, and
the importance of ATAA and the Turkish American
community as a primary
source.

ATAA Participates in National
Intelligence Director's Heritage Community Liaison
Council Meeting
On April 23, the ATAA Secretary General
Pelin Aylangan represented ATAA at the Heritage
Community Liaison Meeting.
Established in 2008 by the US Office of
the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the
council consists of 17 external organizations
representing interests of various ethnic populations,
such as the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee
and the Organization of Chinese Americans. Modeled after
a similar effort pioneered by FBI Director Robert
Mueller, the council coordinates outreach and recruiting
activities and serves as a forum for improving
communications, transparency and trust.
The ATAA has participated in the
Intelligence Summit for three years. Following the
Fort Hood massacre of November 6, ATAA President Evinch
and other community leaders in the Muslim American
community participated in a White House Homeland
Security meeting to discuss issues of motive, intent and
domestic security.
The April meeting included presentations
from and Q&A with high-ranking officials from the
Transportation Security Administration, CIA, FBI, and
National Counter Terrorism Center. Secretary General
Aylangan also met with Paul Monteiro, Associate Director
of the White House Office of Public Engagement, and
reiterated the Turkish-American community's desire for a
Turkic liaison in the White
House.

Judge of Cook County, where he served as Jury Supervisor
to the Cook County Jury Commissioners. Later, he served
as an administrative assistant for the Chicago Park
District. In 1992, Stroger successfully ran for State
Representative of the 31st Legislative District. In the

the daily lives of Cook County residents. Throughout his
career in Springfield, Stroger consistently led
Democratic efforts to reform state government, improve
the quality of life in Illinois, and bring social
justice to all citizens. He worked to control taxes and
reduce spending, to increase access to affordable health
