ATAA Marks Volunteer Appreciation Day

The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) hosted an 'ATAA Volunteer Appreciation Day' on Sunday, June 19th at the newly renovated ATAA Türk Evi in Washington, D.C. The event was held to recognize the selfless individuals that generously continue to volunteer their time to support efforts to empower Turkish American grassroots and strengthen U.S.-Turkish relations. Guests were presented with certificates of appreciation.

ATAA Programs Coordinator Secil Goksu and Civic Engagement Director Yenal Kucuker, also screened the documentary "Homeland" regarding the struggle of the Turkish Cypriots to survive ethnic cleansing 1963-1974 and establish their own country on an equal basis with Greek Cypriots.

Third Secretary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Washington Office, Mustafa Tunc, provided a presentation on the history of the Turkish Cypriots and Northern Cyprus. He encouraged young Turkish Americans to visit Northern Cyprus to experience the beauty, the culture, and passion to survive and excel.

ATAA volunteers have been the main success behind many ATAA events, such as the First Annual National Leadership Conference which was co-hosted with the Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA) in March 2011, the annual April 24 demonstrations against Armenian aggression, the April 30 Young Turks demonstration for Turkish American solidarity in New York City, and the July 30 demonstration for Turkish Cypriot solidarity.

At the April demonstration in front of the Turkish Embassy in D.C., volunteers are the backbone and muscle of the Vanguard Vigil for the Ottoman Muslim and Jewish victims of the Armenian Revolt (1885-1919) and more than 700 victims of modernArmenian terrorism and anti-Turkish hate crimes. This year, thanks to our volunteers, Turkish Americans outnumbered the Armenian ARF demonstrators.
