ATAA Commends the 2011 Turkish Elections

The Assembly of Turkish American Associations extends its congratulations and best wishes for success to all the newly elected members of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

The elections of June 12, 2011 demonstrated that the democratic principles and traditions of Turkey are well established and can be a model for many Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries in their transition to modern political systems.

The Turkish elections were a remarkable tribute to the foundations of a democratic and secular form of government in Turkey, established 91 years ago with the opening of the Grand National Assembly in 1920, and three years later with the formation of the modern Turkish Republic in 1923. These historic steps in Turkish history have paved the road to the free, democratic and vibrant Turkey of today, already crowned the 16th largest economy and the 7th most visited tourist destination in the world.

There is still much to do for the empowerment of the Turkish Republic. We wish utmost success to all the elected officials to continue with the progress of democratization, increased tolerance, and governance by consensus, while promoting the country's solidarity, unity and sovereignty.
