(From L to R) 500. Yil Vakfi Vice President Naim Guleryuz, ATAA President Nurten Ural, Ambassador(Ret.) Mustafa Aksin, AJC Detroit Chapter President Kenneth Gold

A Spectacular Night in Detroit, MI

A joint conference, held by the Assembly of Turkish American Associations and the American Jewish Committee in Detroit, took place on November 19 2008 at the Birmingham Townsend Hotel, which was followed by a pleasant dinner.  Ambassador (ret) Mustafa Aksin and the Vice President of the 500. Yil Vakfi Naim Guleryuz were the keynote speakers of this conference.  There were approximately 150 attendees in this event, wherein the audience also had the chance to enjoy Mine Ozalp’s singing and guitar tunes.

ATAA President Nurten Ural stressed the vital importance of events in promoting the diversity and richness of Turkish culture.

Mustafa Aksin, who served as the Turkish ambassador to Nairobi, Damascus and Belgrade, provided us with an engaging synopsis of the Turkish – Israeli relations since the latter’s foundation 60 years ago.

In a similar vein, Naim Guleryuz, who is an independent historian of the Turkish Jewry and the curator of the Jewish museum in Turkey, gave a meticulous analysis of the history of Jews in Turkey.  Guleryuz journeyed through the Jewish experience in Turkey, starting with their expulsion from Spain in 1492 and salvage under Sultan Beyazit II. In his thought provoking speech, Guleryuz essentially focused on the fin de siècle social and cultural milieu of the Ottoman Jews in such central metropoles as Selanik and Edirne.  Guleryuz concluded with intriguing remarks on the current situation of the Jewish community in Turkey, whose population is around 20.000. 1500 of them reside in Izmir while the remaining majority still live in Istanbul.

President Nurten Ural stressed the vital importance of events like these in promoting the diversity and richness of Turkish culture. Indeed as President Ural justly points out in her speech, cultural occasions of this sort give us an invaluable chance to inform our American friends about the enduring friendship between Turks and Jews as well as other nationalities.

ATAA Detroit’te Muhteşem Gece Bir Gece Düzenledi
