ATAA Gathers Turks and Friends of Turkey
for a Vigil for Turkish Cypriots

Wednesday, July 20, 2011, Washington, D.C.- Despite a heat index of 105 F°, ATAA staff, interns, volunteers, and many Turkish Americans in the D.C. area came together for a 2-day long vigil in front of the Turkish Embassy to commemorate the 37th Anniversary of Turkey's Cyprus Peace Operation. The vigil began Tuesday evening at 6pm through Wednesday afternoon. Volunteers proudly held Turkish and TRNC flags and wore red and white, holding up signs that read "We support Turkish Cypriots" and "Shame on Greek Terrorists for Ethnic Cleansing of Turkish Cypriots."

The Turkish army rescued and protected the lives and liberties of the island's Turkish community and saved them from mass extermination. ATAA supports the Turkish Armed Forces Peacekeeping Mission which in 1974 intervened on the island to stop the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Turkish Cypriots by the Greek army and Greek Cypriot EOKA guerrillas since 1963. ATAA also supports removal of the economic and cultural embargoes that have continued the racist policies of the Greek Cypriot government and violated the human rights of Turkish Cypriots on the island. Turkish-Cypriots have a right to self-determination, which at this time seeks a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation on the island, in opposition to the Greek Cypriot government which seek a politically, ethnically, and religiously Hellenic-dominated island.
