ATAA Post-HFAC Capitol Surge

Dear ATAA Members and Friends of Türkiye:

Following the controversial passage of H.Res. 252 in the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) on March 4, 2010, the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) immediately commenced communications with Congress and the White House.

ATAA submitted "thank you" letters to the 22 HFAC members who voted "No". ATAA also submitted letters of disappointment to the 23 HFAC members who voted "Yes", including one separately to HFAC Chairman Howard Berman. ATAA also submitted a letter to President Barack Obama ahead of April 24 urging him to do all he can to block the H.Res. 252 from coming to the floor of the full House. Please click on the following to read these letters:

I express special thanks to the Council of Turkish Canadians (CTC) who conveyed a public statement to Congress in concern for the negative effect of H.Res. 252 for reconciliation efforts and U.S.-Northern American relations. Please click here to read the CTC statement.

March and April are critical months for the Turkish American community. I thank FTAA and ATAA's local organizations nationwide for supporting the ATAA Census 2010 SayTurk - "Ne Mutlu 'Turk'um' Diyene" campaign. I urge Turkish American household to write in "Turk" under the "Other" category under question #9.

I also thank the ATAA Grassroots Turkish American Broad Advocacy Network (TABAN) leaders and staff for their good work in educating Turkish American communities nationwide on civic engagement, and mobilizing Turkish Americans to defend and promote their heritage. Many TABAN workshops have been successfully combined with the ATAA Turkish Student Outreach Program to connect with and encourage the participation of more than 28,000 Turkish college students in the Turkish-American community and American civic life.

Rest not from duty, but find rest in it.

Respectfully yours,

Gunay Evinch
President
