The Assembly of Turkish American Associations proudly announces the signing of a Census 2010 Partnership Declaration with the U.S. Census Bureau.

ATAA President Gunay Evinch (Övünç) and U.S. Census National and Capital Coordinator Nesreen Khashan signed the Partnership Agreement at the ATAA Headquarters in Washington, DC, on September 29, 2009 pursuant to ATAA Board of Directors Resolution No. 1 of June 29, 2009. The BOD Resolution established the ATAA Census Committee and appointed Regional VP Alp Berker and President-Elect Ergün Kırlıkovalı as Co-Chairs.

Pursuant to the Partnership Agreement, ATAA will spearhead a national campaign to count people of Turkish and Turkic heritage throughout America. ATAA will guide over 500,000 Turkish and Turkic Americans to complete and submit the Census 2010 Form by writing "Turk" in the "Other" box on the Census 2010 form. ATAA will provide census seminars at its local chapters nationwide. ATAA will facilitate the hiring of U.S. Census Bureau, as well as provide official United States government Turkish translations of the form.

Coordinator Khashan stated that ATAA was ideal because of its broad representation, grassroots infrastructure, and vast electronic communications network.

President Evinch stated, "ATAA works with the principle of 'Turkish American solidarity within diversity'; whomever you are as a Turk across this great nation, the ATAA is in your service. Every Turk should stand up and be counted, because the future of our children is counting on us."

Starting this March 2010, every American household will receive a 2010 Census Form in the mail. The Census Form will be due in May. As the Census is required by law, from June through August 2010 the Federal government will send officials to all households which have not submitted an application in order to ensure compliance.

Depending on the results of Census 2010, over $400B in federal funding will be available to state and local projects, including diversity programs. In addition, depending on the enumeration of Turks, the Census Bureau may decide to include a "Turkish" box in the 2020 Census. ATAA is commissioning "Turkic" experts to prepare a report for consideration by the US Census Bureau for the 2020 Census form.

President Evinch expressed that the 2010 Census will be the fifth census in his life as an American-born Turk, and that the Census was always a memorable moment for his family. "As far back as the 1970 Census, I remember my family at the kitchen table and my father would proudly write in "TURK" in the "Other" box on the Census form. Afterwards, my mother would bring out some homemade baklava; "Ah, ne mutlu Türküm diyene."

Türk Amerikan Dernekleri Birliği, A.B.D Nüfus Dairesi ile imzaladığı '2010 Nüfus Sayımı Ortaklık Bildirgesi'ni sizlerle paylaşmaktan gurur duyuyor.

ATAA Başkanı Günay Evinch (Övünç) ve Ulusal Nüfus Sayımı ve Başkent Koordinatörü Khashan, ATAA Yönetim Kurulu'nun 29 Haziran 2009'da aldığı numaralı kararına uygun olarak söz konusu "Ortaklık Anlaşması"nı 29 Eylül 2009 tarihinde ATAA'nın Washington DC'deki ofisinde imzaladı.

Ortaklık anlaşması uyarınca ATAA, Türk ve Türk asıllı vatandaşların sayıma katılması için ulusal bir kampanyaya öncülük edecek. Bu kampanya çerçevesinde; sayıları 500 binin üzerinde olan Türk ve Türk asıllı vatandaşlarımızı 2010 Nüfus formunda yer alan "diğer" seçeneği kutusunu işaretleme ve yanına "Türk" kelimesini yazma konusunda yönlendirecek. Ülke çapındaki tüm yerel temsilciliklerinde nüfus sayımı ile ilgili seminerler düzenleyecek, Amerikan Nüfus Sayım Bürosu'nun iş istihdamına yardımcı olacak, bunun yanı sıra formun resmi Türkçe tercümesini sağlayacak.

Koordinator Nesreen Khashan, ATAA'nın geniş çaplı temsilciliği, sağlam altyapısı ve gelişmiş, modern bir elektronik iletişim ağına sahip olmasından ötürü bütün bu çalışmalara öncülük edebilecek ideal bir kurum olduğunun altını çizdi.

Başkan Evinch, ATAA'nın; farklılıkların olduğu bir ortamda Türk Amerikan dayanışması ile faaliyet gösterdigini belirtti ve şunları ekledi; " Büyük kıtanın her neresinde yaşarsanız yaşayın, ATAA her Türk'ün hizmetindedir. Her Türk hakkını aramalı ve nüfus sayımına katılmalıdır. Çünkü çocuklarımızın geleceği bizlerin elindedir."

Mart 2010 tarihinden itibaren Amerika'daki her aileye, 2010 Nüfus Sayım formu gönderilecektir. Nüfus sayımı yasa gereğince olduğundan, tutarlılığı garantilemek amacıyla federal devlet, Haziran'dan Agustos 2010 tarihine kadar form göndermeyen tüm hanelere yetkililer gönderecektir.

2010 Nüfus Sayımı sonuçlarına dayanarak, çeşitlilik programları dahil olmak üzere, eyalet ve yerel projeler için $400 milyon dolar üzerinde federal fon sağlanacaktır. Bunun yanı sıra; Türkler'in sahip olduğu nüfus rakamına göre, Nüfus Bürosu, 2020 Nüfus Sayımına "Türk" seçeneğini de ekleyebilecektir. ATAA, 2020 Nüfus formunda değerlendirilmek amacıyla Amerikan Nüfus Bürosu'nun dikkatine sunulacak bir rapor için Türk asıllı uzmanlardan oluşan bir komisyon oluşturma girişimindedir.
