ATAA Continues Mission to stop Censorship in Massachusetts Educational Guide, The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA), which is a co-plaintiff in the case of Griswold v. Massachusetts, has filed an appeal in the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, seeking to reverse the dismissal of the case by the District Court. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Turkish American Legal Defense Fund (TALDF) also filed appellate briefs with the court in support of ATAA and the other plaintiffs. In October 1999, www.ataa.org was censored by the Massachusetts Governor from a Teachers Curriculum Guide, despite the public advocacy of ATAA's local chapter, the Turkish American Cultural Society of New England (TACSNE) and the earlier determination of a state commission of educational experts that the Armenian matter constituted a historical controversy and that the ATAA's website along with other websites that challenged the Armenian perspective constituted suitable educational resources. In June 2009, the District Court dismissed the ATAA's case, arguing in effect that the decision on what educational material should be placed in the teachers curriculum guide was ultimately a political matter, not an educational one. In a public statement, ATAA President Gunay Evinch expressed: "The ATAA disagrees with the lower court to the extent that ethnic politics are permitted to bulldoze the legitimate determination of the state's education experts who had found merit in and accepted the Turkish-oriented materials into the curriculum guide. ATAA believes that in no way should political might indicate what one can learn, read, think or say. Nor should it be the indicator of scientific or historical fact and truth. Otherwise, countering dogma and orthodoxies would be impossible, intellectual curiosity and expression would be discouraged, and education would be determined by the tyranny of the strongest lobby. The vast majority of experts on late Ottoman history, who by the way are not of Turkish origin, do not agree with the Armenian allegation of genocide, and no one should permit their books to be burned, not even in the internet." The ATAA is seeking justice and fairness in the Massachusetts educational system, so that Turkish Americans in that state, who are outnumbered 6-1 by Armenians, will have a genuine opportunity, under the protection of the United States Constitution, to present their legitimate views in the education system. ATAA is thankful to its local chapter, TACSNE, for its community service in public education. ATAA's newly elected and talented Regional Vice Presidents Ali Cinar and Tomris Azeri, who work hard to keep their ears to the ground of the Turkish American community, and follow the pulse of public education and civil liberties in their regions, expressed confidence on the side of freedom of speech. Amerikan Sivil Özgürlükler Birliği (ACLU) ve Türk Amerikan Yasal Savunma Fonu (TALDF) de ayrı ayrı sundukları savunmalarla çabalara destek verdi. Ekim 1999 da Massachusetts valisi www.ataa.org adresini öğretmenler tedrisat rehberinden, ATAA'nın bölgedeki üye derneği, New England Türk Amerikan Kültür Cemiyeti (TACSNE') nin kamusal savunmasına ve ondan önce de bir eyalet eğitim uzmanları komisyonunun Ermeni meselesinin tarihi bir çekişme olduğunu, ATAA internet sitesinin ve Ermeni tezini sorgulayan diğer karşı görüşlü sitelerin eğitim kaynakları olarak uygun bulunduğunu belirlemesine rağmen, sansürledi. Nisan 2009 da, Bölge Mahkemesi, öğretmenler tedrisat rehberine hangi eğitim malzemesinin konacağı kararının, son analizde, eğitimsel değil politik bir karar olduğuna hükmederek ATAA nın tezini reddetti. Osmanlı Tarihi uzmanlarının büyük bir çoğunluğu ki bunlar kesinlikle Türk kökenli değildir, Ermeni soykırım iddialarına karşı çıkmaktadır ve hiç kimse onların kitaplarının yakılmasına izin vermemelidir, internette bile olsa." ATAA, Ermenilerin Türklerden altı misli daha kalabalık olduğu Massachusetts eyaletinde adalet ve hakkaniyet aramaktadır ki oradaki Türk-Amerikalılar Amerikan anayasasının koruması altında yasal görüşlerini eğitim sisteminde dillendirebilecek fırsatı bulabilsinler. ATAA bölgedeki üyesi, TACSNE derneğine toplum hizmetleri ve kamu eğitimi için teşekkür eder. ATAA nin yeni seçilen, başarılı ve yetenekli bölge temsilcileri Ali Çınar ve Tomris Azeri, bir yandan kulaklarını Türk toplumuna dikerek eğitim sisteminin ve sivil özgürlüklerin nabzını tutarken, diğer yandan da ifade hürriyetinin kazanacağına olan güvenlerini ifade etmişlerdir.
