ATAA Condemns Continued Killings by PKK Terrorists,
Encourages Support for Mehmetcik Foundation

Washington, DC, October 31, 2007- The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) again condemns the recent killing of four Turkish soldiers by PKK terrorists on Sunday and Monday near the Mount Cudi region near the Iraqi border. These soldiers are the most recent victims of the ruthless acts of terrorism by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

PKK terrorists stage their attacks from Northern Iraq, consistently crossing the border into Turkey, carrying out violent attacks against civilian and military targets, and returning to their bases in Northern Iraq to seek haven.

Once again, it is unfortunate that even though the PKK has been officially recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States since 1984, the US media continues to identify the brutal terrorist activities of the PKK and the organization itself by a milder name. Doing so undermines international efforts to fight terrorism in all shapes and forms. ATAA urges the media to use the proper and official classification for what the PKK and other such an organizations are-terrorists.

As the preeminent organization representing the Turkish American community, we again offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the tens of thousands of victims who have perished as a result of the terrorist activity of the PKK.

To support these families of the Turkish soldiers killed in the country's struggle against terrorism, a donation campaign has been established. The "Mehmetcik Foundation" was established on May 17, 1982, by the Chief of the Turkish General Staff, Forces Commanders and Commander of the Gendarmerie Forces. Mehmetcik is a common name that is given to soldiers who are victims of terrorism. We ask that the community give generously to this foundation through its web site: www.mehmetcik.org.tr Rest assured that your donation will go directly to the foundation. At this critical time, let us demonstrate Turkish Americans support for the families of these victims, and our fervent opposition to terrorism.
