Congressmen Wexler, Hastings and Whitfield Introduce
Resolution Condemning PKK Attacks on Turkey
Washington, DC, November 7, 2007-Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), and Congressman Ed Whitfield (R-KY) have introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives, H.Res.796, condemning the terrorist organization, Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) for its continued acts of terrorism against Turkey. Since 1984, PKK Terrorism caused the deaths of more than 37,000 people in Turkey, including 40 Turkish victims over the past 30 days.
The resolution recognizes more than two decades of terror by the PKK against Turks, and urges the Bush Administration, the Iraqi government and the Kurdish Regional Government to prevent further PKK attacks emanating from northern Iraq. The resolution also expresses Congressional support for the Turkish government and people, urges the Bush Administration to appoint a new special envoy to counter the PKK, and reaffirms the longstanding partnership between the United States and NATO ally Turkey.
As the preeminent organization representing Turkish Americans in the United States and Canada, we appreciate that a few leaders in the House of Representatives have taken a proactive role in condemning the aggression that Turkey has faced from the PKK terrorists, and in particular the recent escalation of violence," said ATAA President Nurten Ural. "Beyond that, the resolution includes a call for all parties directly involved to take concrete steps to eradicate the PKK and close their bases from which they carry out their terrorist acts."
