On June 20, 2020, as the second part of its online webinar series, the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) hosted Dr. Merdan Yanardag, Turkish journalist, writer and producer on socio political programs.

The online webinar titled “The Secularism in Turkey after 83 Years” started with the opening remarks of the ATAA Mid Atlantic Region Vice-President Ilhan Kubilay Geckil.

Guest speaker, Mr. Yanardag started his talk pointing out to the fact that despite other democratic and secular countries of the modern world, the secularism in Turkey still faces major problems rooting from its history; and continued with influences of Islam on Turkish political system dating back to the Seljuk Empire.

Mr. Yanardag stated that one of the main reasons for the problems that Turkey currently faces in the secular system is results from the fact that the secularism was not successfully explained to a larger Turkish population.

The live streaming lasted more than 2 hours and ended with the Q&A session.
