June 5, 2025 / Alexandria, VA – The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) has been made aware of recent public claims and concerns regarding the National Council on Civil Advocacy (NCCA) and its self-declared affiliation with the Gülen movement, a transnational religious and political organization that is the subject of significant controversy both in the United States and internationally.
ATAA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1979, has consistently remained an independent, non-partisan, and secular umbrella organization committed to representing the broad and diverse Turkish American community. We do not support, collaborate with, or endorse any group affiliated with religious or political ideologies that conflict with our mission of promoting civic engagement, secular democratic values, and constructive U.S.-Türkiye relations.
We believe it is the responsibility of organizations operating in the public sphere—especially those claiming to represent ethnic or national communities—to be transparent about their leadership, funding, activities, and affiliations. Lack of clarity on these matters may raise legitimate concerns and undermines public trust.
ATAA reaffirms its commitment to transparency, integrity, and the principles of democratic civil advocacy. We urge all community members and partner organizations to exercise due diligence when engaging with advocacy groups, and to prioritize collaboration with institutions that share a clear and consistent commitment to democratic norms, pluralism, and civic responsibility.
We will continue to monitor developments related to this matter and will act in accordance with our values and the interests of the Turkish American community.
Sincerely,
ATAA Board of Directors
