Background

The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. Global partners were urgently called for action on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our program we are addresses following global targets relate to women’s development and well-being:

#3 Good Health and Well being
Target# 3.4 – By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.

#4 Quality Education
Target 4.3 – By 2030, ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university.

#5 Gender Equality
Target 5.1- End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
Target 5.2 – Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation
Target 5.5 – Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.

The program aims to educate, motivate and encourage collaboration among Turkish American and Canadian Youth. The visionary women or our organization, custodians of women’s development from Atatürk are working towards better future for our young women. Our desired outcome is to prepare our young women towards success and sustainable future.

Program objectives are:

Remember, celebrate, and learn from 100 Years of Turkish women’s Contributions
Educate audience about women’s issues and proposed solutions
Start collaboration among young women to prepare them for successful future and well-being.

Speakers

Women in Science Keynote Speaker

Professor Semahat S. Demir graduated from middle and high schools of Robert College of Istanbul. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. She earned another master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University in the U.S.A. She completed her post-doctoral studies in Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University in the U.S.A. She is a professor of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Electronics Engineering. Professor Demir has been academic adviser to more than 40 successful masters and PhD students.

Dr. Demir has served as the director of USA National Science Foundation (NSF) Biomedical Engineering Program during 2004-2012. She was appointed to be the director of 20 different programs at NSF and in collaboration with NASA, NIH, DOE, VA and FDA. Dr. Demir published 215 scientific papers and has served on 15 editorial and publishing company boards. Having been invited to give more than 879 invited talks in more than 25 countries, Professor Demir has led more than 200 academic assemblies as the congress / assembly chair, the organizer and the delegation/summit head. She has served on the governing board of 14 different organizations including Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and is a senior member of 18 different scientific and community associations. Professor Demir has been granted a total of 161 science and service awards.

She has directed ‘Science Diplomacy Cooperation with Turkey’, a program of the U.S.A. State Department. Professor Demir combined science diplomacy with public diplomacy effectively as a USA Embassy Science Fellow. USA and Turkey signed a Science and Technology agreement on 10/20/2010 where Dr. Demir’s report “Science Diplomacy with Public Diplomacy” provided the foundation.

Professor Semahat S. Demir and her sister Sıddıka Demir Velipaşaoğlu were 2 of the 32 Turkish women engineers to be featured in the book ‘Ataturk’s Engineer Daughters’ published in the year 2010. Dr. Demir has been among the 4 role model people whose names were stated as the ‘People that have served Humanity at Arts, Sports and Science Areas’, in the mandatory life sciences text book for primary school 3rd grade students published by Turkey’s Ministry of National Education.

Dr. Demir served on the SWE Board alone with her sister Sıddıka Demir Velipaşaoğlu, SWE President. Professor Semahat Demir was responsible for SWE’s strategy development, public policy, international participation, E-Week and partnerships. As a board member, she was a key player for talent management and succession planning for SWE leadership pipeline, and the development and implementation of the diversity and inclusion strategy. Dr. Demir worked for SWE’s public policy development and chaired the congressional briefings and roundtables for SWE at the Capitol Hill (Washington DC) and at the National Academies; the goals of these congressional briefings and roundtables were to educate the attendees on the need for more women and diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fields and the importance of diversity issue to the innovation and competitiveness debate.

Professor Demir served as the Rector (President) of Istanbul Kültür University during 2012-2016 and increased student enrollment by 95.4 % (46% for woman students). Currently, she is the President of Science Heroes Association that promotes and develops STEM activities for students. She is also a professor of computer engineering and Dean of Engineering faculty at Istanbul Topkapi University. She is a Fellow of US Embassy Science, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and Society of Women Engineers.

Women in Arts Speaker

Pınar Başgöze has served on the Turkish American Association of Minnesota (TAAM) Board as Vice President-President Elect in the 2018-2020 term, and as President in the 2020-2022 term. Prior to that position at TAAM, she had been involved in co-coordinating two major events, Passage to Turkey I and Passage to Turkey II, organized by TAAM, to introduce Turkish musical and folklore traditions to Minnesotans.

A native of Ankara, Turkey, Pınar Başgöze received her B. A. and M. A. degrees in piano performance under the tutelage of Professor Banu Perk at Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory in Turkey, studied Piano Pedagogy and Performance with Professor Maria Curcio in London and piano performance with Dr. Paul Shaw at the University of Minnesota School of Music. She is a member of Duo Harmonia, formerly known as Başgöze-Pinto Piano Duo, founded in 2008 with pianist and MacPhail Faculty Susana Pinto. Their duo received the 2018 MacPhail Artist Development Grant, funded by The McKnight Foundation, to record their first CD, Harmonia. Pianist Pınar Başgöze recently received the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant FY 2020 for commissioning pieces for piano duet and narrator composed by three different composers from three different countries, based on Minnesotan, Portuguese, and Turkish folk tales. Pınar is a full-time piano faculty member at MacPhail Center for Music, married to Jon Iverson, also a member of MacPhail Piano Faculty, and skillfully managing a life filled with teaching piano, performing, and raising her family.

Pınar Başgöze is a strong advocate of introducing Turkish culture and traditions to other cultures and connecting different cultures together through music, dance and arts. She is a true believer that cultural differences should neither segregate nor discriminate, but only draw people together.

Women’s Health Speakers

Autoimmune – Why Nearly 80 Percent of Autoimmune Sufferers Are Female?
What is Autoimmune Condition? What triggers it? Possible preventative measures we can take? Available treatment options

Professor Dr. Murat İnanç graduated from TED Ankara College in 1979 and Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1985. He became an internist (1991) and rheumatologist (1996) in this institution. In 1996-7 Murat İnanç worked as a visiting research fellow in University College London, UK with Professor David Isenberg on a project about developing monoclonal antiphospholipid antibodies and also studies on other autoimmune rheumatic diseases. He became an associate professor in 1996. He was appointed as professor of medicine/rheumatology at the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2002. He continues to work mainly on inflammatory/autoimmune rheumatic diseases in the same institution and currently head of the rheumatology division and rheumatology education program. He co-authored more than 300 manuscripts mainly on systemic sclerosis, SLE/antiphospholipid syndrome, arthritis and vasculitis including Behçet’s Disease with citations exceeding 12000 (H-index=46, Web of Science). He has been reviewing manuscripts for several journals including Arthritis and Rheumatology, Arthritis Research and Therapy, Rheumatology, Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology, Journal of Rheumatology, Lupus, Rheumatology International and serving as a member of editorial board of Lupus Science and Medicine and Journal of Scleroderma and Related Disorders. He is the immediate past President of Rheumatology Society of Turkey (TRD), and member of the European Scleroderma Trials and Research Group (EUSTAR), Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) and Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium (SCTC).

Autoimmune condition relates to Rheumatology

Prof. Dr. Şeminur Haznedaroğlu graduated from the Turkish Education Association (TED) Private Ankara High School. After graduating from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, she completed her specialization training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine and became an Internal Medicine specialist.

After completing her rheumatology minor education, she became a lecturer at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Diseases. She served as the Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Diseases between 2003-2006. She received the title of Professor at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2007.

She worked actively in the boards related to medical education affiliated to the Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Office. She received communication skills and problem-based learning trainings and was an active trainer in the relevant committees. She served as the Chairman of the Evidence-Based Medicine Board for 6 years at the Dean’s Office. She took an active role in the Turkish and English medical education accreditation studies of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine between 2011-2018 as the Head of the Program Evaluation Group in the Self-Assessment groups, and as the Accreditation Self-Assessment Coordinator between 2016-2018.

There are many national/international research articles, national/international congress proceedings and book chapters on rheumatological diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren’s syndrome, Familial Mediterranean Fever, Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis. Prof. Dr. Şeminur Haznedaroğlu is a member of the Turkish Society for Rheumatology.

Prof. Dr. Binnaz Leblebicioglu, DDS, MS, PhD, is a Professor and Interim Chair of the Division of Periodontology at the Ohio State University (OHU).

She received her MS degree in periodontology and her PhD in oral biology from the OHU College of Dentistry. As a longtime faculty member, she has extensive experience in teaching, mentoring, and conducting research. She currently serves as the Interim Chair of the Division of Periodontics, and she is a practicing periodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

She loves teaching and learning from teaching. She sees herself as a faculty who can close the gap between basic and clinical science related disciplines, and help build strong collaborative ties in teaching and clinical research.

Moving Women Forward Speaker and Youth Forum Moderator

What are the typical issues impact women? Where we were? What changes took place? What do we need to do to ensure women are getting quality education, treated fairly and equity, staying healthy and happy for a sustainable future?

Dr. Ayça Altıntığ is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Drucker School of Management in Claremont, California. She has an undergraduate degree from Bogazici University in Istanbul, and graduate and doctoral degrees from Louisiana State University. Ayca has an extensive history volunteering for various Turkish American Associations.

She has served as the director of the Orange County Turkish School and as a board member of the Orange County Turkish American Association (OCTAA). She has served on the board for Association of Turkish Americans of Southern California (ATASC) including two years as its president. She has also served as the west coast vice president of Assembly of Turkish Americans Association (ATAA) from 2015 to 2017.

Youth Forum Participants

Burcu Alapala is from Turkey and she is a Ph.D. Candidate in Mathematics Education at the University of Wisconsin. Currently, she is teaching undergrad courses at the university and working on her thesis. She is passionate about disrupting the restricted understanding of mathematics as a fixed set of rules and procedures.

She is amazed by the connection of mathematics education with the social, cultural, historical, and physical context in the wide circle and how positioning students as sense makers and mathematical knowledge constructor affects their mathematical identity, their perception of mathematics, and their interpretation of the social, historical, and economic structure of society through mathematics and giving students agency to be a part of change is the status quo.

She has taken active roles in numerous organizations. She has been the president of the Madison Association of Turkish students for five years. She is proud of being a part of one of the oldest student associations in UW-Madison that has been affiliated since 1970. She is thrilled to serve the community and organize events to cultivate connections.

Seda Çamalan graduated from Atilim University Computer Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering with a double major. Then, she studied filtering and quantization effects on segmentation during my master degree in Atilim University, Computer Engineering department.

Lastly, she got her PhD from Software engineering in Machine Vision and Machine Learning experience using state of art methods for classification, feature extraction, and deep learning methods to predict gender and age of people.

She has been a postdoctoral researcher in Wake Forest University since 2019 and worked on medical images to detect and classify eardrum diseases, organoid images, and oral cancer grading. She is recently working on remote sensing images to detect gold mining areas in Amazonian rain forests.

Canan Bulut is a law student at Istanbul University, one of the oldest universities in Turkey and even in the world, was born in Istanbul in 2001. Canan, who knows English at B2 level and French at A2 level, will graduate in July 2023. In addition to the trainings she has been learning in the field of law, she also attended seminars, trainings and information meetings on global issues such as “freedom of expression, refugee children, climate crisis, human rights” in recent years.

She is a member of the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association (TURMEPA) as she is interested in environmental and sustainability issues. Particularly interested in international diplomacy and law, democracy, human rights and environmental issues, She aims to work in international organizations such as the UN in global areas. She loves going to movie readings, playing the violin and walking in the nature.

Bengisu Kara is a dedicated and talented engineering student at Ohio State University, where she is pursuing a highly competitive degree in aerospace engineering. With a rich cultural background as a Turkish-American, Bengisu has lived in the US for the past eight years and is committed to realizing her dreams and reaching her full potential.

Her athletic background as a successful artistic swimmer for nine years, combined with her leadership skills and ability to inspire others, have made her a valuable asset to her team and community. In her free time, Bengisu enjoys exploring the outdoors through hiking, tapping into her creative side through painting, and continuing to learn and grow through reading and trying new skills. Her ultimate goal is to serve as a role model and advocate for women in STEM, working to increase representation and bring awareness to the incredible contributions of women in these fields

Ceyda Ural is currently in her third year at the University of Utah, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. She is a first generation Turkish American and working hard to be the first doctor in her family.

Although a lot of her time is spent studying and working, she spends every possible moment up the canyons. Whether she is skiing, climbing, hiking, or camping, she loves the outdoors.

Ezgi Satıroğlu is a first-year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, TX, specializing in Thermofluidic Nanoscience Technology under the guidance of Professor Ali Beskok. With a keen interest in mass momentum and energy transport in micro and nano-scales, Ezgi’s current research focuses on utilizing molecular dynamics simulations to gain an atomistic view of thin film evaporation in nanochannels.

She is particularly invested in developing a comprehensive understanding of thermal transport systems in the absorbed liquid layer for the next generation of nanochannel systems, leveraging both continuum and atomistic simulation methods as a member of the Bio-Microfluidics Laboratory group.

Ezgi’s academic background includes a Master in Energy Engineering (MSc) degree from Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) in Turkey, where she conducted research on nano-scale wetting, fluid transport, and droplet evaporation at nanostructured surfaces by employing molecular dynamics simulations. This experience provided her with a robust skill set in molecular and numerical simulation, allowing her to contribute to research projects aimed at improving heat transfer in nano-scale systems and fluid transport. Prior to her Master’s degree, Ezgi obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Geophysical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey.

Sanem Kara is a Turkish-American student who’s currently enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she is working to complete her second Associate’s degree in Jewelry Design. She has five years of experience in the fashion industry and in 2021, she received her Associate’s degree in Fashion Design. Sanem has held internships in multiple fashion houses, working to continuously expand her knowledge and skill set in jewelry design. In her spare time, Sanem enjoys participating in various contemporary art activities, training in ballet and ballroom dancing.

In May 2022, Sanem created her own line of wearable costume jewelry, named Heaven.Ly. The goal of Heaven.Ly is to challenge and break the traditional limits and boundaries that have been imposed upon women in fashion through the ages. It strives to grant freedom to its wearers, empowering them to express their own femininity with no constraints. By melding together the realms of jewelry and clothing, Heaven.Ly intends to celebrate traditional concepts of grace, beauty and sensuality, whilst still promoting power, strength and self-assurance. Sanem’s jewelry designs are also meant to be inclusive of all genders, sexual orientations and body sizes, breaking away from any confining social norms regarding attractiveness and desirability. This gives individuals the chance to fully embrace and express their femininity with complete confidence.

Project Key Contributors

G. Lincoln McCurdy is an international affair professional with over 45 years of leadership and management experience in the U.S. government, private sector, NGOs and community service.

Currently, he is a consultant on U.S.- Turkey relations and grassroots organizing. He advises five Turkish American political action committees (PACs) under the Ten Thousand Turks Campaign and previously served as an officer for the Turkish Coalition USA PAC. Until recently, he was the president of the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA), an independent not-for-profit organization in Washington, DC. He also had served on the Board of Directors of the Turkish Philanthropy Funds. Prior to TCA,

McCurdy was the president and chief executive officer of the American-Turkish Council in Washington, DC. Earlier in his career, he worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce, served as the Consul for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, and was a consultant for the Bank of Boston in Turkey. Mr. McCurdy was recognized by the U.S. Department of State for his work in enhancing commercial relations between the United States and Turkey. He was one of the 2018 laureates of the Gusi International Peace Prize in Manila, Philippines, Asia’s foremost award for the attainment of peace and respect for human life. In 2019 he received the Turk of America Outstanding Achievement Award in Leadership & Management.

He graduated from Hanover College in Indiana and holds a M.A. in International Management from The George Washington University. He and his wife have two daughters and two grandchildren.

Professor Mehmet Ergül has 20+ years of experience in the hospitality and tourism sector. He has a wide of interests including but not limited to food tourism, healthy eating habits and their impact on the hospitality industry, new food products development, medical tourism, new destinations for tourism, cultural and film tourism, sustainable tourism, hospitality technology, and social entrepreneurship in the hospitality industry.

He is currently a faculty member at SF State University, College of Business Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management since 2006. He has also served on numerous committees at SF State and was a member of the Academic Senate. Previously he has worked for Texas Tech University, Bilkent University and as a Guest Lecturer / Visiting Professor at numerous institutions globally.

Hülya Koç began her career as entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. The three companies, Hülya developed and formed successfully functioning today. She also co-founded nonprofit organizations such as Empowering Turkish American Community (ETAC). Her most recent work, an employment agency catering to the childcare vertical (www.childcarecareers.net), grew to become an industry leader with 25 offices across the US and was sold to a consortium of US-based private equity firms. In Sept.2012,

Hülya co-founded the Istanbul/Turkey Chapter of Keiretsu Forum – the world’s largest angel investors platform. She has received numerous awards one of which was ‘The Small Business of the Year” from the Honorable Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s Office. Hülya has been recognized for her outstanding leadership and mentorship of entrepreneurs by the US Small Business Administration. She continues to be a mentor for SCORE, the mentoring/counseling arm of SBA.

She advises and mentors international start-ups in a variety of fields such as high tech, retail and business services at Founders Space – an incubator in Silicon Valley ranked in the top ten in the US by Forbes Magazine and UC Berkeley in their Technology Entrepreneurship class. Hülya also routinely presents seminars worldwide on angel investing and science of networking for several organizations. Dedicated to improving the lives of children and entrepreneurs, Hülya globally volunteers extensively for several organizations. She has served on numerous non-profit Boards. As a philanthropist and an active community organizer, Hülya has been granted the Lifetime Service Award by her community. Currently, she is the Co- Founder, Co-President of ETAC – Empowering the Turkish-American Community USA. Hülya holds a graduate degree in business administration and education.

Atiye Bayman, Ph.D is a member of the advisory board to Swift Solar, a solar startup. She is also an advisor to Silicon Catalyst, an incubator focused on silicon solutions. Most recently, she served as the CTO of MiaSolé, where she led technology strategy and research and development for flexible and lightweight thin-film solar products.

Atiye’s 38-year career in Silicon Valley focused on semiconductor technology development for solar and integrated circuit products. She developed expertise in transfer of technology and products into manufacturing. She has held positions in technology R&D at MiaSolé, Novellus Systems, Synergy Semiconductor (acquired by Micrel), and Advanced Micro Devices.

Atiye holds a PhD. in solid state physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. Atiye also serves as the co-chair of Empowering Turkish American Community (ETAC).

The Turkish Women’s Initiative (TWI) – Provides innovative, practical, and sustainable leadership programs for girls and women. Helps women develop leadership skills, believe in their own self-empowerment, and can demonstrate new expressions of courage and resilience, they serve as important role models for their families and communities. Through educational leadership opportunities that promote economic independence and civic engagement, we strengthen the potential of girls and women to become active, responsible and productive members of their societies. In so doing, they advance society’s growth and prosperity. Since its launch in 2009, TWI’s learning-by-doing learning programs have changed the lives not only of the Turkish university women it serves, but by extension thousands of other women, men, and children (and counting). Turkish American Association of Central Ohio (TAACO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, was founded in January 1969 with the primary aim of representing the best of Turkish culture and history to Americans in whose land many Turks had come to make their living. The community of Turks in Columbus is nearly fifty years old, the first members of professionals arriving in the mid 1950s to receive specialized training and to stay at most a couple of years to work after that. By the late 1960s it became clear that they had a new home in the United States, but ever-committed to carrying on the traditions of their native land, the Turkish American Association was formed. Turkish American Association of Minnesota (TAAM) – Provides cultural and educational support to Turkish American community of Minnesota. Turkish Language and Culture School for the youth aims to foster the Turkish identity within the young generation of Turkish Americans by providing them a sense of community and belonging as well as by providing them help with language skills in Turkish, instructions on Turkish Geography, History, Culture, Literature, Music and Folk Dances. Turkish American Association of Northern Texas (TURANT) – is organized and operated exclusively for the purpose of increasing, improving and promoting public knowledge and understanding of the Turkish culture, history and people; to foster friendship and communication among the Turkish American Communities; to promote the exchange of the arts, cultures, music and cuisine of the U.S. and Turkey; to provide humanitarian assistance; and to educate and inform the members of the Corporation and general public. Turkish Canadian Society (TCS) – Founded in 1963, TCS’s vision is to have a resourceful, compassionate, caring, vibrant community that embraces, nourishes and supports everyone, takes pride and ownership in its cultural roots, and collaborates with other Canadian organizations and charities that share the same foresight. TCS’s mission is to increase the public knowledge of contemporary and traditional Turkish art and culture while creating a productive environment, as well as sharing the history and teaching the language, for the enrichment and educational benefit of the people of Canada; by setting up and operating a cultural center and providing necessary tools and equipment that serve to create resources, and a workplace for cultural activities, artists, and musicians; by organizing festivals, conferences, concerts, fine arts exhibitions, a library, community courses, participating in multicultural festivals and other means; and to help new immigrants and their families to successfully integrate into their new homeland.
